About Rikki-Tikki-Tavi and Its Author
Rudyard Kipling spent much of his early life in India, and his deep familiarity with the subcontinent’s wildlife and landscapes gives Rikki-Tikki-Tavi an authentic sense of place. Mongooses are known for their agility and their ability to fight snakes, while cobras are feared for their venom and hooded threat displays. Although the animals speak and display human-like emotions, Kipling grounds their behavior in real natural history. By combining factual animal traits with a compelling plot, Kipling created a story that feels both exotic and universally understandable.
The story is often classified as children’s literature, but its themes of courage, responsibility, and the protection of home give it lasting appeal for readers of all ages.
